In recent years, attitudes towards family structures have changed quite dramatically in China. Despite government censorship, the LGBTQ community is becoming increasingly visible and outspoken.
For several years as a film maker, Popo Fan has been interviewing people regarding their opinions about LGBTQ people. He found that many people reacted positively except when they were thinking about their own families. This inspired Fan to make family issues a key focus of his work.
At this event, Popo Fan will screen excerpts from two of his documentaries, Mama Rainbow (2012) and Papa Rainbow (2016) and answer questions from the audience concerning the political and social situation of LGBTQ people and gender issues in general.
We invite Popo Fan, Independent Filmmaker to discuss.
Popo Fan is a queer independent filmmaker and curator based in Beijing. He is the author of Happy Together: 100 Queer Films, and directs the China Queer Film Festival Tour, which has travelled to over 20 major cities in China since 2008.
