Tom Deegan is a partner in Sidley’s corporate practice in Hong Kong, with a strong focus on transactions in the energy and natural resources sectors. He has spent over 20 years advising clients on international deals throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Central and North America. In addition to his experience on complex energy transactions, he has represented clients in a wide variety of transactional matters including cross-border M&A, joint ventures and restructurings. Prior to joining Sidley, Tom was a partner at the Hong Kong office of two major City law firms for ten years. Consistently recognized as a “Leading Individual” for Projects and Energy in Asia Pacific Legal 500, Tom has also been ranked as a “Leading Individual” in Energy and Natural Resources by Chambers Asia Pacific and by the Expert Guide to the World’s Leading Lawyers.
Tom’s presentation for YCW HK examined the rise of China’s energy giants in the 21st Century, one that mirrors in many ways the rise and evolution of China itself. Having been involved with these companies as an adviser from the earliest stages of their internationalisation to the present day, Tom was able to provide unique views on and insights into the successes and the challenges they have experienced since the turn of the century. He also shared his views on what the next 15 years hold for them and their competitors.
