Andy Rothman has a wealth of knowledge of China’s economic policies, politics, and history after seventeen years in the U.S. Foreign Service and more than twenty years of working in China.
Now based in Shanghai, Rothman has been China Macro Strategist at CLSA since 2000, and his Sinology newsletter delivers his insights to institutional investors. Rothman first visited China as a student in 1980, and returned in 1984 as a U.S. Diplomat. His postings took him to Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Beijing, where he was Director of the Macroeconomic and Domestic Policy Office at the U.S. Embassy. While working in the State Department in D.C., he also assisted with the normalization of U.S. relations with Vietnam.
He holds a B.A. from Colgate University, and an M.A. in Public Administration from the Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, and was a State Department Fellow at MIT’s Seminiar XXI program on national security.
