On September 29, Young China Watchers hosted a conversation with Murray Hiebert, author of “Under Beijing’s Shadow: Southeast Asia’s China Challenge.” This compelling book provides a snapshot of ten countries in Southeast Asia by exploring their diverse experiences with China and how this impacts their perceptions of Beijing’s actions and its long-term political, economic, military, and “soft power” goals in the region.
About Murray Hiebert
Murray Hiebert is Head of Research at BowerGroupAsia and a senior associate of the Southeast Asia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining CSIS, Murray served for five years as senior director for Southeast Asia at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce where he worked with leading American companies, the U.S. government and Southeast Asian counterparts to develop trade and investment opportunities between the United States and Asia.
