March 31: We Met in Beijing book talk & poetry reading with Anthony Tao
In his debut book, Anthony Tao invites readers to join him in the dusty streets, the tree-lined alleys, the rooftops and canals, bars and clubs of China’s political and cultural nerve center. An American who was born in Beijing and spent much of his adult life there, he has seen the city’s multitudes, its highs and lows, from the 2008 Summer Olympics to pandemic-era lockdowns.
This collection is a snapshot of a place filled with contradictions and constantly in flux, as experienced alongside expat friends and lifelong residents: musicians, migrant workers, diplomats, journalists, dreamers, schemers, cat ladies, cab drivers…anyone who has ever tried to put down roots in this gritty, unrelenting metropolis.
