Here’s a look back at the people, ideas, and moments that have shaped our community so far.

Decoding Careers at the China x Tech Intersection | 1.19.26

YCW NY members gathered for a panel discussion exploring how AI, technology competition, and shifting geopolitics are reshaping careers focused on China. Panelists discussed emerging opportunities at the intersection of China and technology, as well as how China-focused professionals can adapt their skills and expertise to a changing job market.

As China’s global relationships continue to evolve, including its deepening ties with countries across the Global South and expanding economic presence in markets such as Brazil, new sectors, geographies, and areas of expertise are emerging for China-focused professionals. Drawing on their own experiences, panelists highlighted the value of developing a clearly defined niche, understanding how China expertise can translate across industries and markets, and building skills that enable professionals to navigate cultural differences, rapid change, and geopolitical uncertainty.

The conversation also emphasized staying informed through independent writers and publications, writing about topics of interest, and building relationships organically around shared interests, reminding attendees that a China-focused career does not have to mean working exclusively on China.

Chinatown Parade Watch & Dim Sum | 3.1.26

Members of YCW NY gathered to continue this beloved Lunar New Year tradition, beginning the day with bubble tea as we waited for our number to be called at the beloved House of Joy. A Chinatown staple for the past 37 years, House of Joy is a treasured destination for dim sum. Once it was, we filled two tables and took turns selecting our favorite dishes from the dim sum carts. House of Joy goes all out for Lunar New Year, with festive decor and a lively atmosphere that makes for a joyful start to the day.

After dim sum, we made our way to the parade, where we enjoyed colorful floats, spectacular dragon performances, and an incredible display of dancers and traditional costumes. The parade brought out the very best of New York City, celebrating the vibrancy of Chinatown and the richness of the Chinese diaspora. This has become one of YCW members’ favorite events of the year, and we look forward to continuing the tradition next Lunar New Year.

From Silk Road to Strategic Corridor: China-ME Relations | 4.17.26

On April 17, 2026, Young China Watchers’ New York chapter hosted a discussion with Pak Yiu, U.S. Correspondent at Nikkei Asia, exploring China’s response to the U.S.-Iran conflict and its broader interests in the Middle East and U.S.-China relations. Drawing on Yiu’s extensive experience reporting on China, the conversation examined Beijing’s close economic ties with Iran, its relationships with regional partners including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and its likely efforts to promote de-escalation rather than become directly involved militarily.

He also discussed China’s domestic military leadership changes, the upcoming Xi-Trump summit, and Beijing’s broader interest in reducing global instability and preserving an international environment conducive to economic development. The discussion concluded with a lively Q&A among YCW members, focusing on China’s evolving role in the conflict and its implications for the region and U.S.-China relations. Our YCW New York community continues to grow, with members coming together throughout the year for casual opportunities to connect, meet new people, and catch up with fellow China-focused professionals.
