Born in 1929 , Dora Fugh Lee began studying classical Chinese painting and caligraphy as a young child in Beijing. Living at a time of enormous societal transformation, Lee was part of a generation of artists defining a new style of contemporary Chinese painting, building on and transforming traditional painting techniques.
In 1957, Lee and her husband moved to Washington, D.C. where she trained in Western classical art. By merging the traditional approaches from her two homes, Lee developed a unique style of her own. She taught painting at George Washington University and at the Smithsonian Institution, and her works are part of the permanent collections at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of Asian Art, and the National Cathedral among others.
